The Busy Life of North Lake Student Sadiya

Last updated on October 4, 2019

This post is written by Sadiya Patel, a DCCCD student blogger and North Lake student.

Hey everyone! My name is Sadiya and I’m so excited to be able to share bits and pieces of my life with y’all! I’m a student at North Lake College, where I plan to get my AA and transfer to a four-year institution to major in Human Rights and nonprofit management. My goal is to go to law school to study International Law. After I studied Islamic Theology at a girls’ boarding school in England, North Lake College was my first choice once I got back. Originally from California, it was also my first school in Texas where I got to make friends.

I’m a full-time student (I almost live on campus!) and work two part-time jobs. I spend my evenings and weekends tutoring kids in reading Arabic. My weekdays, and a lot of my weekends are devoted to my classes and club activities on/off campus, most of them for Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society. I’m a part of various clubs and organizations on campus such as Enactus, Psi Beta National Honor Society in Psychology, SGA, Student Leadership Institute, Journalism Club and I also recently started the Muslim Students Association. I’m also a Student Orientation Leader on campus, and serve as a mentor to many students. It’s pretty hectic, but very much worth it! 🙂

I grew up in California in a conservative Indian family, which painted two contrasting parts of my life. My liberal side made me into an ambitious, goal-oriented feminist which combated many of the stereotypes and handicaps faced by Indian women. I want to go to law school to be able to start up my own nonprofit to encourage women to educate and empower themselves to change society in India. I’m a first-generation college student in my family, and I believe this is a start to my dreams. One of my first steps is sending my mom to college, which I believe will soon be a reality! Coming to NLC has completely changed my life and I can’t wait to see how it changes my mom’s. It’s turned me into a confident leader who’s willing to take risks and stand out. I’ve grown as a student, person and leader. I’ve made friends throughout Texas from all over the world, networked with great individuals and organizations and found lifetime mentors.

Outside of my crazy (but worthwhile) college life, I love to spend my time reading, watching dramas, learning Korean, EATING and hiking. I’m a huge animal lover, so you’ll often find me gushing over cute videos of pandas and cats! I’m an avid traveler and dream of finding treasured nooks and crannies all over the world. My interests range from fashion, photography, food to video editing and human rights. I love to collect quotes, so I’ll share a quote with y’all each time I blog.

Thank you DCCCD for allowing me to share a glimpse of my life!

Best of luck on finals (can’t believe the semester is almost over!) and until next time,
Sadiya
