I am William Kaseu, and I graduated from El Centro in the fall of 2015. I am so thankful to have started my academic career at El Centro College, one of the seven colleges of the DCCCD.
I am William Kaseu, a former STEM and Muse Scholar and recent graduate at the DCCCD. I was born in Volksrust, a small and rural town in the southern outskirts of Mpumalanga, South Africa, and I came to America about three years ago as an international student.
It is not easy to make changes to your life. Change can be hard. Change can be scary. And sometimes change can be lonely, if you don’t have any support.
We all know about the “Near Finals Stress.” The time when college students stress out the most is before finals. Right? I know you agree with me. I feel your struggle. I know all about the late-night studies, the meltdowns and the lack of a social life…
“Making the decision to return back to school and complete my education was a very easy decision.”
This goes out to the people out there who are thinking of doing something different with their life. This is addressed to people of all walks of life, all ages and all backgrounds: if you want to change your life’s path, I say go for it.
Just like most people, it took me awhile to figure out what I wanted to be when I grew up. I went from wanting to be a teacher when I was 6, a singer at 8, a pastry chef at 15, and now at 20 years old… a writer.
I thought that returning back to school after being out for over 20 years would be difficult, but it was the total opposite. I have so enjoyed being back in the rat race of project deadlines, exam crams and wild goose chase book hunts.
Right before Christmas of 2014, I took a big chance. It was now or never. With the support of my husband and my two teen kids, I left my job of 11 1/2 years working in human resources to embark on a path toward a totally different career and lifestyle.
I’m a 47-year-old college student that chose to put off completing my college education in order to raise a son and be a wife.
