Ariana Dewberry Takes Leap of Faith to Make Her Own Path

As one of Dallas College’s seven commencement speakers, Ariana Dewberry shared her journey of returning to college after losing her eyesight. Now having graduated with her Associate of Science degree, she reflects on the support Dallas College provided.

How did it feel to graduate with your degree?

It felt very empowering to be able to get this degree, and I was proud of myself for getting my Associate of Science degree.

What challenges did you overcome to get this degree?

I was worried about self-sabotage when I returned to college. I had to gain a lot of courage to return, especially when there is no blueprint for what I was dealing with as a blind student. I had to take a leap of faith and just try to make my own path.

What led you to pick Dallas College for your education?

I was familiar with Dallas College from when I did dual credit classes. I knew what the process was, and it was very comfortable returning for my degree.

Were there any resources that helped you complete your degree?

There were so many resources with Dallas College that helped me graduate. As a blind student the accessibility department and the basic needs department helped me more than anyone could know. I am also a mother, so I made sure to use the family care program that Dallas College provides.

What resources helped you inside the classroom?

The accessibility department made sure I had all the accommodation possible for taking and being in my classes. They were always personable and there was no one problem that could not be solved or pivoted into a solution for me. I would like to shoutout my professors, especially Professors Guerrero and Lumbley. They helped me in the best way and always made sure to take the initiative for my needs. They wanted me to be the most successful student possible in the classroom. They would see me in their classroom when needed and would schedule tests outside of class. They were really wonderful.

What are you looking to do in the future?

I plan on going into the occupational therapy program at Dallas College. I would like to continue helping people with daily living skills and improving the living experience of others.

Any words of encouragement you would like to give students at Dallas College?

I would say that every journey is unique. Your journey will not look like anyone else’s so there’s no need to compare. Your achievements and accolades will mean so much more to yourself.
