Top Five Tips for Fall: We Want You to Know

Last updated on September 24, 2019

Summer is quickly coming to an end and it’s time to start preparing for the Fall semester. We know college can be overwhelming — even if you’re a current student, it means getting back into the swing of classes, exams and studying. To make the transition easier, here are five tips for starting the Fall semester.

1. Attend orientation.

Depending on which college of the Dallas Community Colleges you attend, you may or may not have to attend student orientation. This orientation will help you get familiar with the campus, find out where to go, learn about the registration process and learn ways you can succeed in college. We highly recommend that you attend orientation, plus you will look like a pro on the first day of class.

2. Meet with an academic advisor.

If you haven’t done so already, be sure to meet with an academic advisor. Advisors are here to help you stay on track with your classes and degree plan. Meeting with an academic advisor will ensure the courses you are taking will count towards your degree. Also, if you plan to transfer to a four-year university, they can double check that your classes are transferable. Interested in seeing which classes will transfer? Be sure to check out our transfer resources.

3. Have your class schedule ready.

Be sure to print your class schedule or have it ready on your phone before the first day of class. This will save you time and frustration! The first day of class is already nerve wracking as it is, and you don’t need additional questions such as what is my class schedule and where do I go? It also comes in handy, when the professor requests that everyone double check to make sure you are in the right class. Not sure where to find your class schedule? No worries, head on over to eConnect and click on “Current Credit Student Menu.” Once you are logged into eConnect, look under “Register for Classes” and click on “My Class Schedule.”

4. Buy or rent your textbooks.

If you can buy or rent your textbooks before the first day of class, you’re ahead of the game. You will avoid long lines at the bookstore and avoid the headache of the textbook you need, being out of stock.

5. Plan your finances ahead of time.

We get it, college is expensive when you add everything up. Be sure to take into consideration all the costs of college, not just tuition and fees. If you need financial aid, we’ve got that covered. We have a step-by-step process mapped out for you when applying for financial aid. If you should get turned around and need help, contact us at 972-587-2599 or, send us an email at facc@dcccd.edu.

Remember no two college experiences are the same. Everyone has different goals and dreams, and we are here to help you find your career path. These are just some helpful tips that we hope you take into consideration this Fall.
