What Is Interior Design?

Interior Design Degree and Certificate Options
El Centro College offers an associate degree and an advanced certificate in Interior Design.
- Interior Design Associate of Applied Science degree, can be completed in two years if you’re a full-time student
- Interior Design Advanced Technical Certificate, admission is based on completion of Interior Design Associate of Applied Science degree and portfolio exam
Can I Take Interior Design Classes Online?
You can take most of your basic courses online such as English, science, mathematics, history, etc. However, most Interior Design classes are not offered online. This is so that you receive as much hands-on training as you can in the classroom before starting your career.
How to Become an Interior Designer
Keep in mind that interior designers usually need a bachelor’s degree but earning your associate degree in Interior Design will give you an idea of what this career is like and a jump start to your future. According to Texas Board of Architectural Examiners, only individuals who are or have become registered with the state of Texas as an interior designer may legally call themselves a registered interior designer. Licensure as an interior designer with the Texas Board of Architectural Examiners requires both education and practical experience as well as passing the National Council for Interior Design Qualifying Exam.
What Do Interior Designers Do?
The primary role of an interior designer is to make spaces functional and safe by determining requirements and selecting decorative items, such as colors, lighting and materials. But that’s not all — as an interior designer you may also do the following:
- Search for and bid on new projects
- Oversee construction and coordinate with general building contractors to implement the plans and specifications for the project.
- Sketch preliminary design plans, including electrical and wall layouts.
- Prepare working drawings and specifications for interior construction, materials, finishes, space planning, furnishings, fixtures and equipment.
- Collaborate with architects, engineers and other licensed professionals as required for regulatory approval.
