Winifred is a Cedar Valley student studying for an associate of arts degree, after which she plans to transfer to the University of Texas at Arlington to complete a bachelor’s degree in education. She has worked in the special education department of the Dallas Independent School District for the past 12 years.
I’m a 47-year-old college student that chose to put off completing my college education in order to raise a son and be a wife.
I attended college back in the late 80s and off and on during 2003-2011, but I never earned a degree. It seemed like something always came up that took precedence over my education. I didn’t do well back in the 80s when I was a college student; although, I was an honor student back in high school. I didn’t really prepare myself mentally, I did lots of partying, and I didn’t concentrate on what was really important.
Given a chance now to go back and complete my education is something I’m taking full advantage of. Our son is an only child, he graduated in 2010 from high school, he earned his bachelor’s degree, and now he’s in his last year of graduate school. I have absolutely no excuse to not finish what I started back in 1989. We don’t have any kids at home, I’m gainfully employed with a good job, my husband is super supportive of my returning to school, and I’m already working in the field in which I’ll be earning a degree.
The moral of my story is: It’s never too late to be great, and as long as you’re willing to work hard, life will always deal you a winning card.
