Our DCCCD 2016 ad campaign student profiles continue today with Mallory! Mallory worked with us as an extra to help us promote our Nursing and health care programs. When Mallory’s not showing off her acting skills, she’s a working mom and a student of anthropology at Richland. She’s also been a huge help with our DCCCD Life Instagram account.
So you’re in our new ad campaign! What’s your name?
Mallory Beach
What made you take an interest in doing the ad with us?
It sounded intriguing and had been a while since I got to play dress up.
What was the process of shooting like for you? What was it like being on set?
Aside from the crack of dawn shooting time, it was an otherwise pleasant break from my usual day job.
What did you like (or not like) about being in the ads?
I think incorporating actual students for the roles was an important piece of the commercials and added legitimacy. Although I wished the targeted roles had been expanded to include working parents such as myself, because we do make up a large percentage of the students at DCCCD.
What are you studying? Why did you choose it?
My major is in my first love: anthropology – the study of humanity. My minor is in my second passion: political science – how we rule each other. I chose them because I think there are enough doctors, lawyers and dental assistants in our society.
Why did you choose to study at DCCCD?
It was an effective cost saving method for a self-funded education plan.
What were you doing before attending DCCCD?
After dropping out after my second semester at Eastfield due to work and school conflict, I re-enrolled 8 years later at Richland more determined than ever. I have better motivations this time and one of them is being a good role model for my son. He has inspired me to continue improving despite whatever limitations life throws our way.
What are your educational or professional plans after DCCCD?
I plan to apply to the University of North Texas and the University of Texas at Arlington to complete my undergraduate and graduate degrees. Perhaps eventually a Ph.D. I picture my career path choices, with my private sector experiences, potentially involving elected office or a position with the U.N., or I will continue to grow and support my own private business. I have also considered the likelihood of writing books as well.
What do you like best about DCCCD? What’s something we can improve on?
My favorite thing is the multiple colleges and the extensive online curriculum options. In the future I would like to see more online class options for honors students. To my knowledge, there are currently few to none. [It would be helpful] for those working professionals and students who are able to achieve the honors status, but are disenfranchised due to lack of options in honors classes, thereby forfeiting the honors distinction at graduation.
What is something you enjoy doing in your spare time?
Spare time is a luxury in my life, but when I am lucky enough to get it, it usually involves: yoga, reading, camping and hiking, long walks with my dog, and most importantly sleeping.
